Treat Bunions Early to Avoid Other Problems

A bunion is a big toe abnormality that is characterized by a hard bump on the side or top of the toe. A similar condition can occur with the pinky toe in which case it is called a bunionette. The mechanical instability of the joints that leads to these conditions is hereditary but they can be exacerbated by wearing tight-fitting shoes that push the toes together.

As the condition worsens and the toe bends further into the other toes it becomes harder to treat and can cause over and underlapping toes and other problems. Seeing your foot doctor early on to treat a bunion will help prevent many of these complications.

Bunions can lead to further problems including the following:

1) Calluses, corns, redness, blistering, and swelling—Since the bony bump can rub against the inside of your shoes the friction can cause blisters and skin conditions like corns and calluses.

2) Other toe problems—When you have a bunion on your big toe you are more likely to develop hammertoe problems.

3) Ingrown toenailsWhen the toe bends and pushes into your footwear the pressure on the toenail can force it to grow into the skin creating a painful ingrown toenail.
