Check the Skin of Your Feet

Since your feet don’t usually get much sun exposure, many people believe that getting skin cancer on their feet is unlikely. Unfortunately, cancerous lesions and other forms of cancer can strike your feet and go unnoticed until cancer has spread. Cancerous tumors may look very much like blisters or moles, and, one type of aggressive cancer can grow underneath your toenails and mimic a fungal toenail infection. Be sure to see your foot doctor for the proper diagnosis and treatment.

Some risk factors that increase your chances of getting cancer on your feet include the following:

Genetic predisposition—People born with blue eyes and light, freckled skin have less of the light-absorbing pigment called melanin. This may make one more susceptible to DNA damage from ultraviolet light exposure.

Exposure to contaminants—Environmental contaminants such as power plant emissions, car exhaust may cause potentially cancerous tumors.

Compromised immune system—A variety of diseases including diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and HIV infection might contribute to immune system failures, inhibiting your body’s ability to fight off disease.

Since skin cancer can look like other foot problems, including common warts and blisters, it is essential to have any anomalies checked by your foot doctor.
