Why Does My Ankle Hurt?

Ankle injuries, foot pain, and discomfort are very common and nearly everyone has twisted their ankle at some point. Your feet and ankles absorb a lot of stress and pressure all day and while they are a marvel of nature’s engineering, they contain many bones, ligaments, and other tissues that can become diseased or injured. For ongoing ankle pain, be sure to see your podiatrist for the proper treatment.ankle pain

Some common causes of ankle pain include the following:

Ankle sprainsThe ligaments and tendons that hold your ankle joint together can become excessively stretched or torn if the ankle is twisted, turned, or rolled accidentally. This can happen very easily while just crossing the street and missing a step at the curb while staring at your phone. For all ankle injuries, you should have an evaluation performed by your podiatrist to receive the proper treatment and to avoid chronic ankle problems in the future.

Achilles tendonitis—The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It connects the back of your heel to your calf muscle and makes ambulation possible. Stress and overuse from sporting activities and work often cause inflammation and injury to the tendon. In fact, sometimes the tendon can tear or completely break under extreme force making a loud popping sound in the process. Extreme pain and immobility follow. Surgery will be required to reattach the tendon.
